Markins & EOS R impressions

On a weekday evening after Golden Week, I went on a photography trip to Minami Izu.

I started using the Markins ball head Q10i-BK in the spring of 2018.
The snappy feel of it being fixed exactly where you want it to be has not changed even after a year. As a photographer whose main subject is landscapes, camera shake and blurring caused by wind and vibration are my greatest enemies, but the stability of the ball head made shooting much easier.

The CANON EOS R was released in the fall of 2018, and now two EOS Rs are my main equipment. On this day, I mainly used the RF24-105mm F4 L IS USM. The Markins plate is a combination of the PC-R1 and LC-R1 designed specifically for the EOS R. The texture and color of the aluminum alloy also match the camera, so I like the aesthetics.

At the rocky area where I was shooting, I set up the tripod in a low position and attached the camera to the ball head Q10i-BK. When I closed the knob, I could feel that the camera was stable. For me, this feeling transmitted from the body is very important, and I feel a sense of security in the Markins structure, which fits snugly and smoothly. Since taking pictures is the most important thing, I am most grateful that I don't have to worry about anything else.

The greatest feature of the LC-R1 sub-plate is that the LCD monitor can be used at various angles without being interfered with by the plate, and vari-angle shooting was also smooth. The LC-R1 is designed to make lens changing easy. Operation is extremely simple. Simply insert your finger into the hole and remove the lens. The shape is impressive and shows how well thought out it was.
When shooting landscapes, it is common to shoot in a horizontal position and then in a vertical position, but since the groove angles of the PC-R1 and LC-R1 are 90 degrees different, you need to rotate the ball head 90 degrees when changing the camera position. Although it seemed troublesome at first, you quickly get used to this operation.
At the shooting site, I also tried a set of PC-R1 + LV-170, and I would recommend this combination to those who do not use the vari-angle lens or those who do not want to change the angle by 90 degrees.

I also shot with the EF100-400mm F4.5-5.6L IS II USM telephoto lens on this day. The VR15J-LS remains as stable as ever, and blurring has been significantly reduced over the past year. Together with the new plate, it will likely continue to be an even more useful tool in my work.
