The Challenge of Shooting Movie
April 2023

I've been shooting nature videos for a few years now, but I just kept exploring the possibilities without making any announcements. However, with the release of the Canon EOS R5, I was able to shoot 8K videos, and I finally shifted my thinking to get serious about it.
It's a slightly different image from videos shot using a gimbal, and it's an effort to show the nature as an extension of the still images I've expressed up until now.
It's true that I felt frustrated that I could only express scenes such as snowy days, windy days, and sparkling seas in still images, so I decided to explore the possibilities of video expression more deeply in order to capture nature in motion.

When it comes to shooting video, it's common to use pan and tilt to create movement in the footage, but there's no way you can compete with video professionals that way. So I decided to keep the framing fixed and shoot scenes where nature is moving.
Fortunately, the Markins tripod head that I normally use for filming is stable enough, so I didn't need to buy any special equipment for video, which was the deciding factor.
Of course, Markins also offers tripod heads that are suitable for filming using pan and tilt, so please use them according to your purpose.

When shooting, I needed a different perspective than I usually use when taking still images. It's a well-known fact that nature is in motion even when it appears still, but without a certain amount of significant movement, it wouldn't work as a video.
To do that, I made a point of choosing windy days or days with snow. You could even say that scenes where blurring would be a worry when taking still images are best suited to nature videos.

The sea is a great motif. The ebb and flow of the waves is perfect for video, and the beauty of the water's surface sparkling at sunrise may be better conveyed in a video than in a still image.
Birds fly around, and a ship departs at sunrise. The motif works well without moving the camera. However, since the wind is strong, it goes without saying that a stable tripod head is necessary.

It's also beautiful to see the clouds on the ridgeline blowing in the strong wind on a winter morning. The diamond dust seen in the bitter cold can be conveyed more realistically than in still images.
Of course, the shooting style is the same as for still images. Just set the camera in the usual Markins and press the REC button. On windy days, you will need to use the shadow of a car to block the wind, but basic shooting can be done as an extension of still photography.

In this on-site report, we will show you some videos that were shot this winter. Unfortunately, we are not able to stream 8K, but I think you will see that shooting 8K videos is no different from regular shooting.
